About chris

Chris Bair is a computer geek and SalesForce.com system administrator for his "day job". He became involved in the powdered foods (aka "soylent") movement in January 2014, originally with a conventional recipe and later switching to a high fat, low carb "ketogenic" variant on October 2014. In January 2015 he created the recipe for Keto Chow and released it without restriction for anyone to use, at the same time he began mixing the recipe up for people that wanted a finished product and has seen steady growth in the business every month since. Conversely since starting Keto, he has added 6 new holes to his belt and recently bought a far smaller belt. He has also eaten far more bacon and cheese than in all his previous years combined trying to avoid fat but still slowly gaining weight. Chris has lived in Utah for most of his life, except for a few years living in Chile where he learned Castillian. Chris and his wife have two sets of twins with a couple singltons thrown in for good measure.

Day 034 – 100 days of Keto (Chow)

Last day of the conference, tonight after the Expo Hall closes we all get to take down the stuff that took 5 days to put up. Depending on how many stay to help it might only take 5 hours, so I might even be home sometime before Sunday morning. Didn’t have any of the fountain drink yesterday, just water, some diet soda I brought and Keto Chow. Today I’m planning on stashing a keto chow in a hydroflask in my car for when we finish taking down. I’ll have some for breakfast and again for lunch.

As for tomorrow, we’ve established a family tradition of doing a Super Bowl party with our kids. This year my parents (also doing keto) and my younger brother (also doing keto) will be joining us. So far we have shrimp (plus reduced sugar ketchup and some horseradish = low carb cocktail sauce!), I’m making a bunch of wings, going to bake them, I have a big bag of cheese curds from Costco and we’re going to make bacon wrapped jalapeno poppers too. I’m planning on heading into all this fasting, you know: for fun!

Spent a large portion of the day at the RootsTech conference filling glasses up with ice so they could be filled with soda. We joke that we’re really putting our training and skills to use. I’m going to guess that the 8-9 8 ounce glasses of diet Dr. Pepper I drank yesterday had some effect since my weight is up and my ketones are non-measurable =( Today I brought along a big bottle of “Clear American” soda instead, I’ve never seen it affect my progress so that should help; and unlike a fountain drink I know exactly what I’m getting and how much. Had a snickerdoodle keto chow for breakfast during the keynote and I have another in a hydroflask for lunch just like yesterday.

Did my 3rd weigh in for the city weight loss contest, down another 2 lbs from the week before according to them. I.F. went well yesterday, drank 2 keto chows whilst watching “Groundhog Day” last night with my family (it’s a tradition and it was WAY too crazy on Tuesday to do it then).

Finally got my blood tests back, for those following along at home here’s what my total Testosterone numbers have done for the last couple years;

3/20/2014 11/26/2014 5/26/2015 1/22/2016
378 747 881 1016

For my age group, it’s supposed to be 668 or so. Yeah, that’s a really nice improvement and I’ll happily take it. My doctor has advised me to try going off clomid and see what happens to my numbers after a couple months.

Long (cold) day yesterday. Spent most of the day helping set up several booths at the Salt Palace convention center for the RootsTech conference that’s starting today. My blood ketone levels are WAY up because I did intermittent fasting for most of the day yesterday: drank a snickerdoodle keto chow while driving home, then drank another after I got home and finished the evening with left-over keto chow muffins. Not bothering with eating most of the day turned out to be a very good thing – the giant expo hall we were setting up computers in had forklifts running in and out all day so they don’t have the heat on and with the wind blowing it, you might as well be outside. With the weather being in the low 20’s that was pretty cold and I’m not as big a guy as I used to be, I even wear sweaters now. I had a jacket on but it wasn’t nearly up to the task, I even took a break to head into the bathroom and use the hand dryer to warm up my hands enough to get some feeling back in them. Ever tried plugging in 4-dimensional USB cables with numb fingers?

So while all the other guys were off to lunch, I jogged the 3 blocks back to my office cubicle, grabbed my heavy winter coat and gloves (along with coats for 3 other guys that were also unprepared) and brought them back. I’ll be bringing my coat to the expo hall today =) It was nice to not have to worry about food all day though, going to do it again today and maybe for the rest of the week – though I’m not sure, I might just skip breakfast since I’m unsure what time I’ll be heading home Thurs-Saturday.

When I got home my wife and 3 of the kids had an activity to go to so I had the remaining kids clean their rooms for a few minutes then let them watch the last episode of My Diet is Better Than Yours since one of them fell asleep during the initial broadcast. This time I was the one that fell asleep. My wife came home and took a picture (and let me sleep for a few more minutes until the 6 year old came and poked my shoulder and told me it was time to wake up); she said “you can use that for tomorrow’s post” – so I did =).

Did a good job at sticking to just Keto Chow, though I could have been better. My parents came home from Hawaii and brought some macadamia nuts for me. The can had 4.5 servings and it’s already mostly gone =).

Today the plan is to do Intermittent Fasting (and spell checker says I finally remembered how to spell that on the first try); I only brought one meal with me today and I’ll drink that while I’m driving home. Yesterday I had to carry around a hydroflask everytime I went from one location to another so I’m just going to skip that today.

Busy weekend, had to mix and package enough product to last the next 8 days. Saturday I had a steak for lunch, that was yummy. I also made keto chow muffins 3x this weekend and I revised the recipe with some changes. This week will be interesting – the first part of the week I’m helping set up a technology conference so I’ll be crazy busy, then I’ll be helping run computer labs at the conference for the rest of the week. I’m planning on either using hydroflask insulated bottles or doing intermittent fasting – just don’t bother with eating and do it when I get home. I opted for the latter approach last year and it worked out just fine. Either way I’m going to do my very best to only drink Keto Chow this week, so I’ll see how it goes! To that end I mixed up the biggest batch of blender bottles I’ve ever done: 18 (that’s what the photo is). Did it 6 at a time, 3 different flavors. Should last about 4 days.

Made some more muffins this morning. Again the kids finished them off. We watched the finale of “My Diet is Better Than Yours” – it was kinda surreal when the Paleo guy started explaining Intermittent Fasting. My kids actually knew what it was before he explained it.

At my weigh-in yesterday I was down 3 lbs from the previous week, not bad. Hopefully this next week will be even better. Somebody asked what I’m using to measure blood ketones. I’m using a Nova Max glucose/ketone meter with it’s incredibly expensive ($2 each) ketone testing strips. I think if I had to do it over again I would buy testing strips for the Precision Xtra instead but this is what I have and it’s what I’m going to use.

Last night I tried making Keto Chow muffins but with some modifications to the recipe: I didn’t whip the cream, I mixed it in a blender, I added a little coconut flour. Overall it worked out extremely well and I’m going to try it again tonight but without the coconut flour and adding the powder while the blender is running (I got a couple dry clumps on the side because I didn’t get it mixing fast enough). I made 3 “meals” worth split up into 24 muffins. I ate 8, my wife ate like 5 or 6 and the kids ate most of the rest. My youngest daughter asked for another and I pointed out that she had pizza right there that I can’t eat “Ok, I’ll eat 2 more pieces and then can I have another one?” So if you had any doubt whether they’re good, don’t doubt the muffins!

PSA: “Fat Head” documentary online

This came up today so I thought I’d post for everyone, the Fat Head documentary used to be on YouTube but was taken down. Now days you can find it on Hulu: http://www.hulu.com/watch/196879 and also on Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/127401963 – the Hulu one seems more official.

If you haven’t seen Fat Head, it’s a rather good introduction to HFLC/Keto and explains some of the history behind the war on fat and cholesterol. Along with the info there’s a healthy dose of humor. It’s a good way to explain what the crap you’re doing when people ask =)

It follows stand-up comedian Tom Naughton as he tries to lose weight on a fast-food diet, to prove Morgan “Super Size Me” Spurlock wrong. Along the way Naughton realizes that he himself has been wrong in focusing only on calories.

Weight is still coming down and I had time to run on the treadmill last night. Going to try to do that again today. Today marks the end of week 1 of my city’s weight loss program (“Mission: Slim Possible”) so I’ll be doing my first weigh in for that after work. They send out an email with the names of the 3 people who lost the most each week. Last year I was in the top 3 like 5 times (and finished 2nd overall) – I doubt I’ll be in the top 3 this first week but if I can stick to my plan and stay away from malitol and other high GI sugar alcohols I should do well the subsequent weeks.

The graph comes from “Withings” which I use to track my weight, in turn it feeds data over to Fitbit and CRON-O-meter. The App and site are free to use though they like it if you buy one of their wifi scales =) I got the WS-50 a bit over a year ago and it works well aside from randomly switching to Kilograms.
